YouTube Might Disable the ‘Dislike’ Function Soon

YouTube has recently announced that they are currently experimenting with hiding or completely removing the ‘dislike’ function in an attempt to combat people from deliberately hating on creator’s content.

As it stands right now, content creators and viewers alike, are able to view the stats for both likes and dislikes on a video but following the update (when it is released), only likes will be displayed on the video. For content creators who require feedback regarding their videos, the dislikes on the video will be available for viewing on their personal YouTube Studio page.

👍👎 In response to creator feedback around well-being and targeted dislike campaigns, we're testing a few new designs that don't show the public dislike count. If you're part of this small experiment, you might spot one of these designs in the coming weeks (example below!). pic.twitter.com/aemrIcnrbx — YouTube (@YouTube) March 30, 2021

According to a support article from YouTube, dislikes appear to negatively impact a creator’s well-being and might motivate targeted campaign dislikes on a creator’s video. In short, the dislike function right now, serves as a means for most people to spread hate through a form of heard mentality.

Well it is certainly a step in the right direction here as opposed to what Twitter just did, but the question has to be answered, why is it necessary? Why are people spreading so much hate online? It is rather discomforting to see how our society has latched onto this trend of hating on people.

Well to some people, they feel quite the opposite with YouTube’s decision

How will viewers quickly be able to know the general rating of the video and whether or not they should invest time into watching something. Time is valuable. Bad decision. Dislike. — Rusty Cage (@RSTYCG) March 30, 2021
Nobody actually wants this, except those creators whose content is so bad that they need to hide the amount of dislikes they get on their videos. You're actively promoting bad content by doing this. — Cynical Reviews (@Cynical_CJ) March 30, 2021

That said, there is no current news on whether or not the removal of the ‘dislike’ function will be finalized, but based on the current trends, it is very likely that the removal will be implemented and it is just a question of when.
