US Researchers Found Compounds In Cannabis That Is Effective In Fighting Off Covid-19
In a study named "Cannabinoids Block Cellular Entry of SARS-CoV-2 and the Emerging Variants" done by Oregon State University researchers and published by the Journal of Natural Products, they found that there are compounds in cannabis that is effective in fighting off the Covid-19 virus.
The researchers discovered that 2 cannabinoid acids that are commonly found in hemp can attach themselves to the spike protein of a SARS-CoV-2 cell. When the cannabinoid acid latches onto it, it can then "prevent the virus from entering cells and causing infection."
“They are not controlled substances like THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and have a good safety profile in humans,” said Richard van Breeman, the main researcher. He also added that the compounds show promise with other Covid-19 variants as well like B.1.1.7 and B.1.351.
While cannabinoids have a lot of potential to be used to treat and prevent Covid-19, take this with a grain of salt as this current study still needs further research. “Resistant variants could still arise amid widespread use of cannabinoids but with the combination of vaccination and CBDA/CBGA treatment it would be a much more challenging environment for SARS-CoV-2.”
