TikTok Beats Facebook As World’s Most Downloaded Social Media App

Since most of the world was forced into lockdown last year, many of us have turned to TikTok, be it to create or watch random videos just to pass time. Thanks to this, the Chinese video-sharing app has been crowned the world’s most downloaded social media app in 2020.

Despite former US President Donald Trump’s attempt to ban TikTok in America due to an alleged national security risk, the app is holding on stronger than ever. In fact, its success and popularity among mobile users is even prompting other social media apps to emulate its formula and introduce their own version of the app, such as YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.

Not only did TikTok manage to overtake Facebook and claim the top spot, this is also the first time a non-Facebook-owned app has topped the list since 2018. However, Facebook proves that its monopoly on the social media market is still going strong as its remaining apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger have respectively claimed the third, fourth and fifth spot in the global top five.

Meanwhile, multimedia instant messaging app Snapchat claims the sixth spot on the most downloaded apps worldwide, followed by Telegram, which is increasing in popularity thanks to speculations about its competitor, WhatsApp’s privacy violation. Similar to TikTok, Chinese-owned video creation and sharing app Likee is the world’s seventh most downloaded app, followed by Pinterest, and rounding up the global top ten list is Twitter.
