The Zodiac Killer’s 340 Cipher is finally cracked after 51 years
Ever wondered what’s in the mind of a serial killer? The logical answer would be no, and they won’t want you to either. But since psycho is a popular trait of serial killers, you can’t expect them to all act the same.
The notorious Zodiac Killer was so full of himself he actually mailed letters and cards to major newspapers and threatened that if they’re not published, he will go on a killing spree. The first coded note was deciphered within days by amateur cryptographers.
This must have angered him because he sent another, more complicated one a few months later. So complicated that it took 51 years to break.
On December 5th, 2020 David Oranchak (USA), Sam Blake (Australia) and Jarl Van Eycke (Belgium) cracked the code with the aid of a software programmed by Van Eycke.
Here’s what it says (don’t hold your breath):
I HOPE YOU ARE HAVING LOTS OF FUN IN TRYING TO CATCH ME
THAT WASN’T ME ON THE TV SHOW
WHICH BRINGS UP A POINT ABOUT ME
I AM NOT AFRAID OF THE GAS CHAMBER BECAUSE IT WILL SEND ME TO PARADICE ALL THE SOONER
BECAUSE I NOW HAVE ENOUGH SLAVES TO WORK FOR ME
WHERE EVERYONE ELSE HAS NOTHING WHEN THEY REACH PARADICE
SO THEY ARE AFRAID OF DEATH
I AM NOT AFRAID BECAUSE I KNOW THAT MY NEW LIFE WILL BE AN EASY ONE IN PARADICE DEATH
But in all seriousness, this will hopefully bring detectives one step closer to identifying the perpetrator. The Zodiac Killer, who was never caught, claims to have killed 37 people but as of now, only 5 have been confirmed. This development could be vital to bringing justice to the victims and closure to their families.
