The Fabled Under-Display Camera is Finally Here and it is Honestly Quite Disappointing

If you are bored of the usual punch-hole, pop-up and notch cameras, this new under-display camera may very well be the new toy for you! But for those of you who are avid selfie shooters, you might find the ZTE Axon 20 5G (what a mouthful) somewhat lacking.

Although the new under-display camera the ZTE Axon 20 5G features is quite an industry shaking concept, it is far from perfect. Before we dive further into the camera itself, its best that you understand how the under-display camera works.

Thanks to popular tech youtuber JerryRigEverything, you can do so in a very insightful video that he uploaded December of last year.

In a nutshell, the company has used two displays, but the construction of it appears to be far from seamless. There’s the standard 6.92-inch OLED panel that serves as the basic smartphone screen, and then there’s a smaller square screen that is housed just on top of the selfie camera.

Now on to the selfies. Although the ZTE Axon 20 5G’s selfie camera is ‘okay’ it really isn’t anything to write home about. It features a 32mp selfie camera with a f/2.0 aperture and when compared to the S21 Ultra’s selfie camera (40MP Quad-Bayer shooter with autofocus) the former really does pale in comparison.

Although we can clearly see that the photo quality of the ZTE Axon 20 5G is not abysmal, it isn’t all to great either. That said, it is still an impressive feat managing to completely hide the selfie camera while still maintaining a rather decent camera performance.

It is still premature to say whether or not this is the future of smartphones but there are rumors suggesting that Samsung has acquired the patents for this design. Perhaps Samsung might perfect the design?

What do you think? Do you like the new under-display selfie camera?
