Spotify Drops 'Shuffle' As The Default Play Option For Albums Because Adele Said So

Just like many other musicians out there, the order of songs in an album matters a lot, as it affects how a narrative is presented and how listeners will react. Essentially, it will also affect how many albums will be sold.

As Adele's 4th studio album "30" just released a couple of days ago, Spotify decided to change things up with the way listeners get to play an album. Previously, the album default play option was left on "shuffle", so songs will not be in the order they appear on an album.

Spotify specifically mentioned Adele when announcing its change, as she was among the artists who have campaigned for the "play" choice. “As Adele mentioned, we are excited to share that we have begun rolling out a new Premium feature that has been long requested by both users and artists to make play the default button on all albums. For those users still wishing to shuffle an album, they can go to the Now Playing View and select the shuffle toggle,” a spokesman for Spotify said.

The English singer and songwriter brought it to Twitter to thank Spotify, “We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason. Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended. Thank you Spotify for listening.”

In her latest album release, she sings about her divorce and the guilt, depression and self-doubt that followed, a story she wanted fans and listeners to experience the way she had crafted it.
