Simu Liu Slams Disney CEO’s Comment, Says ‘We Are Not An Experiment’

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some Disney films like ‘Black Window’ and ‘Cruella’ have been released simultaneously in theatres and on Disney+ Premiere Access so viewers can enjoy the films within the safety of their own homes.

That said, Marvel’s upcoming Asian superhero movie ‘Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ has been set for an exclusive theatrical release for 45 days before it officially drops on Disney+. Speaking on this, Disney CEO Bob Chapek describes the release plan as an “interesting experiment” that may be “another data point to inform our actions going forward on our titles”.

However, the star of ‘Shang Chi’, Simu Liu is not at all happy with Chapek’s statement. The Chinese-Canadian actor took to Twitter and Instagram to respond to Chapek’s comment, saying “We are not an experiment.”

“We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year. We are the surprise.” said Liu, who often talks about the importance of having Asian voices and representation in Hollywood films.

He ended his statement with a rather aggressive reminder about the movie release next month, saying “I’m fired the f**k up to make history on September 3rd; JOIN US.” Are you excited to watch Marvel’s first-ever Asian superhero movie?
