In an effort to promote regular Covid-19 testing among the public, the government has decided to make self-test kits more affordable and accessible by capping its ceiling price at RM19.90, starting this Sunday (5 September).
As of now, most of the self-test kits are sold at a retail price of RM28 to RM40 each. But thanks to the ceiling price implementation, the public can now acquire self-test kits at a much cheaper price. Those who purchase the kits in bulk will also get to enjoy a wholesale price that’s capped at RM16.
“The ceiling wholesale and retail pricing of Covid-19 antigen rapid test kits (self-testing) is made according to the appropriateness and suitability for more effective enforcement to ensure reasonable prices and availability of supplies in the market for the benefit of consumers and traders,” said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi in a joint statement yesterday.
The new pricing will apply to all 11 brands of Covid-19 self-test kits that have been approved by the Ministry of Health for public use. Traders who are found guilty of selling the kits above the ceiling price can be penalised under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.
