Public Advised To Only Drink Treated Or Boiled Water After Detecting Cholera In Petaling District

If you are unclear what cholera is, it is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the toxigenic bacterium Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 or O139. According to a circular, the Selangor health department issued a statewide cholera alert to all hospitals and district health clinics after detecting a case in the Petaling district.

Early symptoms of the disease may include painless watery stool, vomiting, dehydration, circulatory collapse, and even death if left untreated. Medical practitioners were advised to take preventive measures to curb the spread by taking stool samples for texture and sensitivity tests for suspected cases, and report the suspected or confirmed cases to the nearest district health office within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the public was advised to only drink treated or boiled water, practice good self-hygiene, seek immediate treatment if found symptoms associated with cholera, and avoid eating raw food.
