Penang Man Tries To Swim Across Sea In Desperate Attempt To Meet Friend

We often hear people say “I would swim across the ocean for you” as an expression of love, but no one actually means it literally, except for this guy in Penang who seriously tried to swim across the Penang Strait because he wanted to meet his friend so badly.

The 28-year-old man had tried to apply for an inter-district travel permit to meet his friend in the mainland. But when his request was rejected, the man decided to jump into the sea near Tanjung City Marina to swim to Seberang Prai at around 6pm on Monday (12 July) evening.

At one point, images and video footage of the man swimming had gone viral online, where some netizens were speculating that the man jumped into the sea after he was rejected from boarding the ferry.

It didn’t take long before the man got tired of swimming and gave up. He was eventually rescued by some Penang Port workers at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, about 300m from his original diving spot.

“No identity document was found on the man, instead he only stated personal details like his name and identity card number orally. Further investigation found that the man was from Bayan Lepas, Penang and did not have a job,” said Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong.

For now, the man is being treated at the Penang Hospital after he broke his arm while swimming. The police are expected to conduct further investigation on this incident once the man is discharged from hospital.
