Noisy and Modified Motorcycle Exhaust Pipes Can Land You in Jail

If your neighbor is keeping you up at night with their noisy modified ‘kapcai’, or perhaps your best friend can’t seem to stop modifying his motorcycle to make it sound like a Formula 1 car, then I highly suggest you share this article with them.

As it turns out, according to Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director, Datuk Azisman Alias, any person modifying their motorcycle is committing an offense as per Rule 103 of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Rules 1959 (LN 170/1959) which states that every exhaust (silencer/muffler) installed on a motor vehicle should be maintained in good condition at all times.

Such an offense will warrant a fine up to RM2,000 or jail time up to six months. Said Datuk Azisman.

I for one, am glad that this law is being enforced as I don’t particularly see a point in modifying your motorcycle to make it louder that it already is. Not only does it serve as a hazard on the road as it will distract drivers, it will also cause discomfort to children and babies around housing areas.
