Netizens Are Backing Up Single Mother Sentenced To Death Due To Drug Conviction
A video of a single mother sobbing in Tawau after getting sentenced to death due to a drug conviction went viral. The clip was extremely heartbreaking, which sparked discussions among Malaysians.
The accused was charged with the possession of syabu weighing 113.9g in an unnumbered house in Kampung Pangkalan Wakuba, Tawau on 10 January 2018. According to Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, it provides a mandatory death sentence or life in prison if convicted.
Various human rights groups have consistently pushed for the abolishment of capital punishment after the Pakatan Harapan (PH) federal administration first highlighted the issue. Netizens intensified calls to drop the punishment, sharing the sentiment that the accused probably only committed the crime to make a living for herself and her 9 children.
While some may say, a crime is a crime, there must have been a reason for the single mother to commit the crime and place herself in such a position. It is truly sad to think that her children will be losing their mother who was probably struggling to earn money and keep them fed.
What do you think about this? Should there still be death penalties this day and age?
