Namewee Returns and Surrenders Himself to Malaysian Police

Namewee is back in Malaysia and locals are eager to welcome him back! Malaysian rapper Wee Meng Chee (黄明志), announced last week that he will be returning home through a video in which he ‘apologized’ for his ‘slanderous’ statements. Here is the video, viewer discretion is advised.

He landed in Kuala Lumpur International Airport on 14 March and was almost immediately detained by local authorities for 2 hours when he passed through immigration.

As one would come to expect with a celebrity like Namewee, many fans were already waiting for him at the airport all wanting to take photos. Some fans asked him when he was going to release his new songs and some even asked when the could watch the movie ‘Babi’ to which he replied, “Welcome to Taiwan”.

For some fans who were worried that Namewee would suddenly ‘disappear’ once being detained in the airport, they could finally breathe easy when he posted a picture of himself on Instagram sprawled across his bed in the hotel room and eating his breakfast in said hotel room.

Namewee will be surrendering himself to Bukit Aman after his 1 week quarantine. He graciously thanked all his fans and supporters for caring for him through the posts.

Namewee’s wanted status in Malaysia is attributed to his recent film ‘Babi’ which was released in Taiwan. Following the release of the film, a police report was made towards the end of 2020 after Persatuan Seniman Malaysia’s secretary-general Mohd Hafiz Mohd Nafiah saw clips of the film.

According to Mohd Hafiz, the film contained elements of racism to which Namewee replied, that it was based on a true story.
