Melaka's Famous Capitol Satay Celup Restaurant To Shut Down For Good In November

If you've ever visited Melaka, you've probably heard of satay celup, a dish where you dip your choice of meat or vegetables on skewers into a pot of spicy and delicious peanut sauce. You may have even come across a restaurant which saw long lines of people queuing by the road, just to get a taste of the famed delicacy. But sadly, the popular Capitol Satay Celup restaurant will be closing down permanently in November.

The news was announced by the restaurant's third-generation owner, Mr Liu. As it is with any business these days, Capitol Satay Celup struggled with sales due to the lack of dine-in customers. Before the pandemic, the shop was able to make over RM2 million a year but right now, the turnover from takeouts was less than RM5,000 per month.

On top of that, the electricity bill for the store's cold room alone costs RM23,000 a month. Mr Liu also added that the restaurant lot's rental fee is expected to increase by 30% once business resumes and dine-ins are allowed. With all these factors in mind, Capitol Satay Celup has no choice but to shut down after 30 years in business.

The restaurant will be open for dine-ins from tomorrow until it closes in November. During this period, the new operation hours are 4pm to 11pm every Tuesday to Sunday. If you're hoping to catch the restaurant one last time, make sure to drop by but remember to follow the SOPs!
