Mark Zuckerberg Lost RM25 Billion In One Day After Facebook's Six-Hour Outage

While most users in Asian countries were sound asleep during the wee hours of yesterday (5 October), the rest of the world was experiencing a social media meltdown after several apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger went offline for almost six hours.

Although it may have been torturous to live without social media for that long, the consequences were far worse for business owners who probably suffered losses in sales due to the outage. Even Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly suffered a $6 billion (RM25 billion) loss in net worth after his company's stock plummeted due to the crash.

The outage, which was said to be due to a configuration issue, caused Facebook's stock to plummet by 4.9%, which adds to a total drop of about 15% since mid-September. Zuckerberg's personal wealth also declined to $121.6 billion (RM506 billion), pushing him down to the fifth spot on the Bloomberg Billionaire Index.

As a result, Zuckerberg immediately took to Facebook after the network restoration to apologise for what was considered as the company's longest lasting outage since 2019. Meanwhile, Facebook's CTO Mike Schroepfer also apologised to all the businesses, families, and individuals who were affected by the outage.
