Man Forced To Do 300 Squats For Breaching Covid-19 Curfew Dies
According to The Straits Times, a 28-year old Filipino man passed away after being forced to do 300 squats for breaching a Covid-19 curfew in General Trias, Cavite province, Philippines. Apparently the curfew for the city has been imposed from 6pm to 5am due to the rise in Covid-19 cases.
Darren Manaog Peñaredondo went out of his house on 1 April to buy some water but was stopped by the police and was immediately forced to do “pumping exercises” 100 times. He was demanded to repeat the exercises which added up to a total of 300 squats.
The victim was allowed to return home after the punishment, but had a convulsion and went into a coma which led to his death at around 10pm the same day. His family mentioned that, “He started to convulse on Saturday, but we were able to revive him at home. Then his body failed so we revived him again, but he was already comatose.”
The local police did some investigation and found out that the victim was not arrested by policemen, but by barangay tanod (watchmen) in the area. The undersecretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government added that, “All police officers who will be proven to have violated the law will be prosecuted and meted with appropriate (administrative) and criminal penalties.”
Our prayers go out to Peñaredondo and his family.
