Man Dresses Up As ‘The Joker’ To Run For Governor In Japan

Imagine voting for a comic book villain as your governor. That’s probably what residents in Chiba Prefecture, Japan feel right now after a man who was dressed up as Joker from Batman announced that he will be running for governor.

Yuusuke Kawai took on an unconventional approach when he recently appeared on Japanese broadcast outlet NHK dressed in the Joker’s costume and make up to present his campaign for governor.

In true antihero fashion, Kawai directly addressed the viewers at the beginning of his presentation  to urge them to start recording his speech and then post it on YouTube and TikTok.

As part of his campaign, Kawai also released a music video on YouTube where he once again dressed up as the Joker to walk around the streets of Tokyo with dance music playing in the background.

And if that’s not bizarre enough, Kawai’s campaign policies include several outlandish goals like building a Tokyo Tower in Chiba, renaming Narita International Airport as Disney Sky and making Frozen’s ‘Let It Go’ as the official Chiba prefecture’s theme song. Under Kawai’s governance, the word ‘trash’ would be banned in Chiba, and instead be replaced with the term ‘star fragments’.

But Kawai’s speech wasn’t entirely ridiculous though, the politician also addressed the issue on anti-maskers and emphasised on the importance of wearing masks, especially during the upcoming Spring season where allergies become more rampant.

Speaking to Tokyo Sports about his choice of clown costume, Kawai says “Since the clown is kind of a dark hero, I had this impression that I could get the support of the masses.” Not sure about the citizens of Chiba prefecture, but Kawai certainly has my support.
