Malaysian Singer Cheryl K Duets With Lionel Richie On American Idol
“As a Malaysian, when we were growing up, ‘American Idol’ was always impressive and many of us have joked about making it to that stage someday,” said 25-year-old singer Cheryl K, except she wasn’t joking because she really did make it to the American Idol stage.
Malaysian-born Cheryl Koh, better known by her stage name Cheryl K, was recently featured on American Idol after she auditioned for the singing competition in front of judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie.
With her pet dog ‘Jimmy Choo’ in her arms, Cheryl boldly took the stage and expressed her excitement to be on the show after years of watching it as a fan.
But the highlight of the audition was probably Cheryl getting to live her dream of performing a duet of ‘Endless Love’ with none other than Lionel Richie. She even managed to have him autograph her original copy of his 1981 vinyl!
Unfortunately, Cheryl didn’t receive enough ‘yeses’ from the judges to make it through the next round, but that doesn’t mean she is not a force to be reckoned with.
The Shah Alam-native who is currently based in Los Angeles had previously recorded a cover of ‘Money (That’s What I Want)’ that was featured in ‘Crazy Rich Asians’. Since she graduated with a bachelor of science in business administration and a minor in music industry in 2017, Cheryl has been pursuing a career in music and had even released multiple self-written and co-written singles under her name!
Moreover, being able to make it on the show is an accomplishment on its own, one that Cheryl is proud of and grateful for. But most importantly, she got to hear Lionel Richie telling her how she “brought tears and wonderful memories to his life” on the show, and if that’s not a win in life, then I don’t know what is.
You brought tears and wonderful memories to my eyes today on #AmericanIdol @thisischerylk! Glad to have met you and JimmyChoo today ✨💞 pic.twitter.com/HB9SgKTvOE — Lionel Richie (@LionelRichie) March 8, 2021
