Malaysia Ranks 13th In The World When It Comes To Instant Noodles Consumption

Updated: Dec 9, 2021

It’s no surprise that Malaysians love instant noodles, be it home-cooked or at the mamak, there’s never a bad reason to eat them (except maybe for the lack of nutrition). That said, we are a little surprise to find that with all the instant noodles we’ve been eating, Malaysia only ranked 13th in the world at instant noodles consumption.

According to the World Instant Noodles Association (WINA), China tops the global instant noodles consumption list, probably thanks to its large population numbers. Coming in second place is Indonesia, which blessed us with the gift of Indomie. And rounding up the top three is Vietnam, which is said to have an even higher growth rate in consumption as compared to China.

Due to the pandemic, instant noodles saw a surge in demand by 14.79% globally in 2020. Unsurprisingly, Asian countries are one of the biggest consumers, accounting for 56.45% of the total global consumption. Out of this, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia alone take up 25.24% of the total demand.

In terms of fan favourite instant noodles flavours, consumers in Europe and America seemed to prefer creamy cheese-based flavours while Asian countries show a penchant for spicier flavours like curry, chili pepper, and tom yam. What is your favourite instant noodles flavour?
