The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) research team developed a 20-second Covid-19 Screening and Monitoring Mobile Device called i-Breath which will be commercialised and marketed by the end of next year. According to the Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Adham Baba, the Malaysian government allocated RM1.05 million under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation's (MOSTI) Strategic Research Fund (SRF) to develop the test.

UTM shared an image that shows the features of the device, it allows users to breathe through a tube through the nose and is equipped with a screen that will display respiratory features and allows self-health monitoring via smartphones. “i-Breath is developed using advanced technology based on artificial intelligence (AI) and can be used anywhere. It takes as fast as 20 seconds to detect the presence of COVID-19 and the sensitivity of this device is up to 93%,” said Dr. Adham Baba.

However, the device is still currently in prototype stages, and will need another 6 months to be confirmed. Apparently, the i-Breathe looks like it would be the fastest solution to Covid-19 testing, as the self-testing kits take around 15 minutes or more to conduct.

Meanwhile, Dr- Adham Baba also mentioned that the ministry is currently working on a mobile phone application that can detect Covid-19 through users' cough sound patterns.
