Covid-19 Vaccine Recipients Advised To Avoid Donating Blood

Here is an important heads up for all present and future Covid-19 vaccine recipients in Malaysia: you may want to avoid donating blood for the time being, at least not until the National Blood Bank releases further details for vaccinated donors.

According to Penang General Hospital blood bank medical officer Dr Yap Pau Yee, the cessation period will differ for donors based on the brand of vaccine they receive.

Based on a report by abc4.com, individuals who received a vaccine manufactured by AstraZeneca, Janssen/Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, Novavax, or Pfizer have no deferral time for blood donation, which means that as long as they are symptom free and feeling well at the time of their donation, they can donate blood without waiting.

However, according Penang General Hospital’s blood bank PR officer, Lina Diyana believes it is better for donors not to donate blood immediately after getting vaccinated.
