Covid-19 Symptoms Often Show Up In This Particular Order

According to studies done by the University of Southern California, they were able to determine Covid-19 symptoms that often start in a particular order. To differentiate influenza from Covid-19 symptoms, influenza usually starts with a cough but the latter begins with a fever. However, this is not 100% accurate as physicians mentioned that there were patients that experience different symptoms.

“This order is especially important to know when we have overlapping cycles of illnesses like the flu that coincide with infections of COVID-19,” said Peter Kuhn, PhD, one of the study authors and professor of medicine, biomedical engineering, aerospace, and mechanical engineering at USC.

“The order of the symptoms matter,” said Joseph Larsen, lead study author and USC Dornsife doctoral candidate. “Knowing that each illness progresses differently means that doctors can identify sooner whether someone likely has COVID-19, or another illness, which can help them make better treatment decisions.”

Researchers took analyzed rates of symptoms collected by the World Health Organization for over 55,000 confirmed cases in China to predict the order of Covid-19 symptoms. They also compared the order of symptoms to influenza from over 2,000 influenza cases in North America, Europe, and the Southern Hemisphere between the year 1994 and 1998.

The Covid-19 symptoms timeline goes according to this order:

  1. Fever

  2. Cough and Muscle Pain

  3. Nausea or Vomiting

  4. Diarrhea

In general, fever is the most common initial symptom of the Covid-19 virus, but in reality there are broad ranges of symptoms that frontliners witnessed. There are patients that only gotten chest pain, loss of taste or smell, or chilblains (a skin reaction in response to acute inflammation). “They don’t always present ‘according to the book,’ so you must cast a wide net when thinking about who may or may not have COVID-19,” Dr. Robert Glatter, emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York added.
