Cannabis Oil Seller Escapes Death Penalty
Known as “Dr Ganja” in the media, 31-year-old Muhammad Lukman Mohamad managed to cheat death as the Federal Court has allowed his appeal on trafficking counts yesterday.
The engineer used to sell cannabis oil for alleged medicinal purposes to help treat patients with cancer. He was accused of committing the offence at a house in Bandar Mahkota, Banting on 7 December 2015.
The case was first held at the Shah Alam High Court in August 2018 where he was found guilty on three charges of trafficking. Then, last year, the Court of Appeal upheld the death sentence on his first two charges but decided to reduce the third charge to possession which carried a 7 year jail term and 10 strokes of caning.
Lukman’s current sentence stands at five years on each count of possession where both sentences would run concurrently, allowing him to serve only five years of jail time.
His lawyer, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik said his client would be released from the Maran jail after a prison official completes administering his caning sentence as Lukman has already completed his 7 year jail term.
