British Influencer Oli London Criticised For Coming Out As ‘Non-Binary Korean’

Do you ever read something and think to yourself ,”there’s no way this is for real”? That’s exactly how I feel about Oli London. If you don’t know who or what Oli London is, consider yourself lucky, but here’s a little background: Oli London is a British influencer who’s infamously known for getting multiple plastic surgeries to look like a K-pop star, more specifically Jimin from BTS.

As if being hated by ARMYs isn’t enough, Oli is now receiving backlash from more Korean netizens after the influencer recently came out as a “non-binary Korean”. In a tweet, Oli posted a photo of an edited South Korean flag with rainbow colours to represent their new identity, which comes with the pronouns of  “They/them/kor/ean”, I’m sorry but what the eff is that…

This is my new official flag for being a non-binary person who identifies as Korean. Thank you for the overwhelming support it was so hard for me to come out as Them/they/kor/ean 🏳️‍🌈⚧ #olilondon #nonbinary — Oli London (@OliLondonTV) June 18, 2021

While it’s fine to use “they/them” pronouns, many users are furious at Oli for coining ridiculous neopronouns like “kor/ean” which appears to be making fun of actual non-binary individuals. Not to mention, you can’t just wake up one morning and decide to identify as Korean, I mean you can, but that’s obviously delusional.

A South Korean user also voiced their frustration regarding Oli’s statement, saying “I can understand your passion and love for K-pop, Korea and your sexual identity, but we Koreans cannot welcome you because [the altered flag is] such an insulting image. Each national flag has its own meaning. To us, Taegeuk-gi (태극기) is a symbol of independence and unity.”

But at this point, you might’ve already figured out that Oli London is no ordinary human being who would be so easily deterred by backlash. The influencer even took to YouTube to announce that they are now identifying with a new set of neopronouns, “Ji/min”.

Oli has long been accused of fetishizing and appropriating Korean people and their culture, so this latest issue is nothing new. But if this is your first time hearing about Oli London, what are your thoughts?
