Big Hit Entertainment And Universal Music Group Are Creating A New Global K-Pop Boyband

I think it is safe to say that K-Pop is currently one of the biggest hits in the international music industry (all thanks to the massive success from boybands and girl groups like BTS and Blackpink), it may just seem like the popular music genre is about to get bigger and more global.

Universal Music Group (UMG) is reportedly collaborating with Big Hit Entertainment, the label that manages BTS, to create a new K-Pop style boyband that will be based in the US. According to Big Hit’s chairman and CEO Bang Si-hyuk, this boyband will “rewrite global music history”.

This collaboration will be a joint venture between Big Hit and UMG subsidiary, Interscope Geffen A&M Records. The process will take place in Los Angeles and kickstart with televised auditions in 2022.

The recipe to create this new boyband will build on the expertise and success areas of each company with Big Hit focusing on establishing a “K-Pop style” that appeals to pop music fans all over the world.

According to Big Hit’s global CEO Lenzo Yoon, the new boyband will follow the “K-pop system” as understood by Big Hit, which means “full-production, and includes music, performance, fashion, music videos, and engagement with fans”.

“Music fans the world over will be able to experience the birth of an unprecedented group that brings together world-leading capabilities,” added Yoon.
