19-Yr-Old Becomes The First Malaysian To Bag A Silver Medal At The World Weightlifting Championships

Malaysia Boleh! Our very own national athlete from Johor, Aniq Kasdan bagged a silver medal at the World Weightlifting Championships in Uzbekistan on 7 December. The 19-year-old athlete earned the medal by lifting 142kg in the men's under 55kg clean and jerk event in Tashkent.

What's even more impressive, Aniq is the first Malaysian to win a medal at the annual competition organised by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF)! On top of that achievement, he also set a new national record in the competition by lifting 107kg in the snatch event, earning a total score of 249kg!

Due to the pandemic, the IWF World Championships also doubles up as the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, and thus becoming the main qualifier event for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The Johor athlete managed to walk away with a gold medal for the Commonwealth Championships, giving him a spot for the 2022 Games!

"This is Malaysia's best ever performance in the history of the World Championships," said Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) president Datuk Ayub Rahmat.

Congratulations Aniq Kasdan!
