17-Yr-Old Killed In Hit-And-Run While Searching For Internet Connection In Sarawak
It’s sad to know that while major cities in Malaysia continue to see the addition of new shopping malls and skyscrapers, many rural areas across the country still struggle with basic internet coverage. What’s worse is that this problem has robbed many people of their access to education, job opportunities and for some, their lives.
Around 9pm on Monday (2 August), 17-year-old student Kemalia Fran George was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident while she was trying to search for internet connection along one of the roads in the Julau district of Sarikei, Sarawak.
When the incident happened, Kemalia had been riding pillion on her friend’s motorcycle while they were searching for better internet coverage to complete their assignment. Although they were rushed to the Julau health clinic, Kemalia was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival, while her friend sustained minor injuries.
The news has since caught the attention of Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, who expressed his condolences to Kemalia’s family, and added that a new communication tower was in the process of being built by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority.
