12-Year-Old Boy From Miri Cooks His Way Into Our Hearts

What were you doing when you were 12? Well odds are not cooking and selling Nasi Lemak. Most youngsters nowadays spend most of their spare time either playing games or recording TikTok videos but for Junjie, he preferred to hone his craft of cooking.

The 12-year-old Junjie first started cooking back when he was 8 where his dad would catch him sneaking into the kitchen to cook noodles. Since then, he would help around the house with cooking. He even makes stir-fried noodles, rice, ‘kuetiau’ (don’t @ me please), and even lamb which won him much praise from his family.

It seems his family wasn’t the only ones that he managed to earn praising from, as many locals around Miri fell in love with his Nasi Lemak once he started to make and sell it. In turn, Junjie attracted multiple loyal customers and fans.

Perfecting Nasi Lemak is by no means an easy feat as the rice needs to be extremely fragrant while still maintaining a moist and fluffy texture without being too soggy or dry. Furthermore, the accompaniment of fried chicken will require ample time to perfect in order to get a product with a crispy exterior and a moist, tender, juicy interior.

For Junjie however, his passion in the craft transcended the challenges needed to master the simple, yet difficult local favorite.

He now single-handedly cooks and prepares the Nasi Lemak that he sells at his parents restaurant. Junjie opens his little stall at 7am and only closes at 3pm. On average, he sells anywhere between 20-40 packs a day.
